We like to talk about the human body as a marvel of engineering, elegant, efficient, built for purpose. It’s a comforting story. It’s also mostly wrong.

Evolution isn’t an engineer. It doesn’t sit down with a blank page and design the optimal solution. It’s more like a contractor who can never tear down the existing structure, only bolt new rooms onto it, rewire around the plumbing that’s already there, and hope the whole thing holds up. A recent piece by evolutionary biologist Lucy E. Hyde (University of Bristol), published in The Conversation, walks through some of the clearest evidence of this: our anatomy as a historical record of compromise, not a finished blueprint.

The spine: built for branches, repurposed for standing

Our vertebral column wasn’t designed for walking upright. It evolved in four-legged, tree-dwelling ancestors, where its job was to act as a flexible beam, good for moving smoothly from branch to branch while protecting the spinal cord running through it. When our ancestors stood up, the spine didn’t get redesigned for the new job. It just took on an extra one: holding the entire body weight vertically and keeping our center of gravity stable, all while staying flexible enough to move. That double duty is a large part of why back pain is such a universal human complaint.

The eye: wired backwards

Here’s one that surprises most people: the human retina is installed backwards. Light has to pass through a layer of nerve fibers before it ever reaches the photoreceptor cells that actually detect it. And because the optic nerve has to bundle those fibers and exit through the retina to reach the brain, it punches a literal hole in our visual field, the blind spot. Our brains paper over the gap so seamlessly that most of us go our whole lives without noticing it. It works, but a backwards retina with a hole in it is not what you’d call an elegant design.

Teeth that no longer fit

Wisdom teeth are a timing problem more than a design flaw. Our ancestors had bigger jaws suited to tougher, harder-to-chew diets. As diets softened over generations, jaw size shrank, but the number of teeth we grow didn’t shrink along with it. The result is a mouth that often doesn’t have room for the third molars it’s still programmed to produce, leading to impaction, crowding, and a very modern trip to the oral surgeon.

Childbirth: two demands pulling in opposite directions

This might be the sharpest example of evolutionary compromise in the whole body. The pelvis has to satisfy two competing requirements at once: a narrow shape for efficient bipedal walking, and a wide enough canal to deliver a large-brained infant. Human babies are born with unusually large heads relative to their body size, which makes childbirth in our species difficult and often dangerous enough to require assistance, something most other mammals don’t need. That tension between mobility and brain size hasn’t just shaped our anatomy; it’s shaped our social behavior too, favoring cooperative childcare and cultural practices built around birth.

The leftovers: ear muscles and the appendix

Evolution doesn’t clean up after itself unless a feature becomes an actual liability. That’s why we still carry tiny muscles around our ears, the same ones that let many mammals swivel their outer ears toward a sound, even though almost none of us can use them. It’s also why the appendix, long dismissed as a useless leftover, turns out to have a minor role in immune function after all. Not costly enough to disappear, not useful enough to be a headline feature.

Why this framing actually matters

This isn’t just trivia, it’s a genuinely useful lens for medicine. Back pain, difficult childbirth, dental crowding, even chronic sinus problems stop looking like random bad luck and start looking like predictable consequences of a body built by incremental patchwork rather than clean design. Evolution optimizes for good enough to reproduce, not optimal for a long, pain-free life. Every structure we carry is a historical record of the problems our ancestors needed solved at the time, not the problems we’re dealing with now.
