On August 12, 2026, the sky over Europe did something it hadn’t done since 1999: it went dark in the middle of the day. A total solar eclipse swept across the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain, giving mainland Europe its first true totality in 27 years, and mainland Spain its first since 1905.

A narrow path, a huge audience

The path of totality was a band roughly 5,100 miles long but only about 180 miles wide, stretching from northern Russia through Greenland and Iceland, down into Spain, clipping a corner of Portugal, and finally fading out over the Mediterranean. Around 15 million people lived inside that narrow strip. Hundreds of millions more across Europe, parts of North America, and northwestern Africa caught a partial eclipse instead, the moon taking a bite out of the sun without ever fully covering it.

Spain got one of the most dramatic shows. Totality swept across the country from west to east and on over the Balearic Islands, with the eclipse beginning locally around 7:30 p.m. and totality arriving roughly an hour later, meaning many watched the sun go dark low on the horizon, near sunset. Crowds gathered on beaches in Mallorca, in the mountains of Catalonia, and along the Cantabrian coast, while cities from Munich to Kraków to Liverpool watched a partial eclipse unfold instead.

An eclipse with an encore

The timing turned out to be a gift for skywatchers. A solar eclipse can only happen during a new moon, which meant the sky stayed dark and moonless that night, just as the Perseid meteor shower was reaching its peak. Under the right conditions, some observers even caught a bright Perseid streaking by during totality itself, a rare double feature of sky events on the same night.

Why totality feels different

Anywhere the sun remained even partially visible, proper eclipse glasses or certified solar filters were essential. It was only during the brief window of totality, when the moon fully blocked the sun’s disk, that observers could look up with the naked eye and see the sun’s corona flaring out around the black disk of the moon. That short window, lasting just over two minutes at its longest, is what draws people to travel across continents for these events: nothing else quite recreates the abrupt drop in light, temperature, and birdsong that comes with a total eclipse.

What’s next

This eclipse was the first of three that will sweep across parts of Europe before the decade is out. On August 2, 2027, a total solar eclipse will cross southern Spain, North Africa, and the Middle East, with a partial eclipse visible across much of Europe. Then, on January 26, 2028, an annular “ring of fire” eclipse will pass over Portugal and Spain. For now, though, the images from August 12, silhouettes against the Eiffel Tower, beach crowds in eclipse glasses, the sun’s corona hanging over Tarragona’s Roman ruins, are a reminder of how rare, and how worth planning for, these few minutes of daytime darkness really are.
